Bollywood has been exremely popular all over the world. In recent times many of the bollywood Actors, characters have been used in other ways such as toys (Krish, Ghazini), Or Stickers etc.

Soon we would see Bollywood glam girl Priyanka Chopra as a comic strip heroine in an international comic book series.

British businessman Richard Branson is all for Priyanka Chopra. After showering accolades on the actress, the entrepreneur is keen on turning her into a comic strip heroine for his publishing house, Virgin Comics. The character will look like Priyanka and will also be named after her. With this new facet as a comic strip heroine, Priyanka becomes the first Bollywood star and the second in India (after Sachin Tendulkar) to be featured in Virgin Comics.

An excited Priyanka is all thankful for Branson. She Says: “It’s a great honour. Big filmmakers and actors like John Woo, Nicholas Cage, Shekhar Kapoor and Terry Gilliam are associated with Branson’s comics. Even our Sachin has a comic book series with him. I’m working on two projects. One is a completely fictional story and character. The other will be a super hero who looks like me and will borrow incidents from my life.”

But This is not the first time any Bollywood actor has been roped in for comic book series. Star Comics had created A Superhero was also based on our own Millenium Superstar Amitabh Bachchan named – Supremo. created by None other than Gulzar, It was an instant hit among all the age groups.

supremo-amitabh-umennet“Supremo was supposed to be the costumed alter ego of Indian film superstar Amitabh Bachchan. He has 2 boy sidekicks –Vijay and Anthony (they are again normal human beings and do not wear any special costume). He has a falcon, named Shaheen,  as a pet, who also acts as scout.”

Identity/Class: Normal human
Affiliations: Vijay, Anthony (sidekicks); Shaheen (falcon)
Costume: Conventional superhero couture of undies-over-tights has been avoided, and Supremo has a piece of brown cloth draped coyly around his waist, held there by a hip-holster.
Base of Operations: India
First Appearance: Adventures of Amitabh Bachchan (Star Comics)
Powers/Abilities: Supremo has no super-powers. He has the combination of strength to defeat his human adversaries and intelligence to get out of traps laid for him.

Is an ambitious, dare-devil, high-flier youth breed a figment of our imaginations? Or a hope we harbor to console ourselves that the world will be handed over safely into better, more able hands? The conditions are all facilitating and the opportunities galore! The world is our oyster and together we can….or can we?!

MTV roadies umennetIf the latest shown through Reality TV was to offer us a window into what the next generations have in store for us, I believe we could be in for a rude shock! Either  channels look for the kind who should not be permitted to breed, let alone be aided in the process of getting them together and finding perfect matches! Or then… THIS IS IT!!! This is what the crux of India’s youth consists of…. Badly brought-up, selfish brats of low intellect who have zero sense of loyalty or integrity.

To begin with, I strongly feel that INDIANS CANNOT DO REALITY. It just doesn’t fit the frame. We’re too conscious, with no wit and atrocious senses of humour. That’s a fact. When a camera is put in front of us, all these qualities assume gigantic proportions and due to insecurity woven into the very fabric of our beings, the result is anything but candid. To further develop on the idea, Reality shows involving typical Indian youth is even more unbearable… I have nothing against any TV channel but the fact that shows such as Splitsvilla and Roadies originate from the similar shed, is hard to miss. Yes, it’s the same TG…agreed. But what are we trying to project to the  impressionable lot?

  • That’s it’s quite alright to live your life oblivious of any social or civic responsibilities?
  • That I can cheat and lie as long as no one finds out. Even if they do, it’s their bad luck?
  • That I can get fame and money by being a total B*&^% ?!
  • I don’t need to have respect for ANYONE, let alone any elders. When I’m rich and famous, none of this will matter in any case!!
  • That abusive language sounds cool and peer pressure is to be bowed down to?
  • I have no family that matter.  The friends I make because of this show are those who will be by my side throughout!
You get the drift, I’m sure.

The dismay according to me however is manifold. Primarily, I worry about the motivation that lures the youth into aspiring to be associated with these programs. I have managed to sit through a few episodes in which starry eyed juveniles claim that it is their dream to be on “so and so…” program. How does a platform where you will be subjected to embarrassing and aggravating situations appear as a dream to you? Where are those ambitions that aim to lead with innovative yet honest ways?
This reminds me of one episode which I must mention here, no names, no references but more real than reality itself… The teams were offered laxatives after a heavy loaded meal. Post consumption, anyone who could not ‘hold it in’, would get out and let his/her team down. The rest is up to you to imagine… I know that the brainstorming department of this particular episode, must have been mighty pleased with itself, but how is this of interest or entertainment to anyone….I fail to understand. And what is it a test of? The most constipated bowels?? I don’t get it! Maybe I am getting too old…
Another aspect is that of the viewer – It’s the youth who watch of course (right on target with the TG) but why? Some think that they’re so much better that the idiots on TV and so are highly amused! Others are just like them and so can identify totally. The shows, mind you, don’t really require any qualifications except a good face and or body for camera. They also tend to make special efforts to select those who possess the power to aggravate the viewer the most!

mtv-spitsvilla-umennetOverall, my worry however is the tendency of our society to take part in and then watch these shows, week after week. According to me, they encourage ‘wrong’ and validate it. As Indians, we are known to put one another down and revel in another’s defeat but the behavior being displayed in these programs takes disgust to the next level. I’m sure the families of the participants cannot be watching and encouraging their children, and if they are, God help us all! As such are the families from which those that can go to the extent of murder in the name of ragging originate.

With a youth potential of almost 50% of our total population, there are some important questions we should be asking apart from which of Satan’s creations will win this week’s episode!
It’s not the show concepts that are faulty, it’s more the bi-products and after effects that need to be given due attention to….as the TRP’s keep rising….!!!

Satyakam is an ideal of truth, obedience and true service to the guru. Satyakam’s story is from Chhandogopnishad (4th chapter).  The Story goes like this:

satyakam umennetSatyakam was the son of a woman named Jabal. He had a strong wish to study and so he left home in search of a guru. He went to the ashram of sage Gautam and requested him to make him his pupil. Gautam questioned him, “Before I make you my pupil, I need to know about your family.”  This puzzled Satyakam, as he had no idea about his family except his mother. But to join the ashram he would not lie. He told the sage that he would ask his mother. So he went to Jabal.

His mother told him, ” Go to the sage and tell him ‘I am the son of Jabal and my name is Satyakam Jabali‘.” (Jabal had served as maid servant to many, and she did not knew who Satykam’s father was). Satyakam went to Gautam and told him what he knew. The sage was pleased with his love for truth and accepted him as his pupil.

Based on this story, a film by same name was released in 1969, directed by Hrishikesh Muherjee. With Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Sharmila Tagore & Ashok Kumar in leading roles, this is till date Dharmendra’s best performance.  Satyakam is story of  Satyapriya Acharya, Played by Dharmendra, who embodies the repercussions that result when a man places his lofty ideals over social obligations, monetary temptations and, indeed, over his own family.

A riveting, nationalist drama in which, Satyakam asks, ‘In an imperfect world, is it possible to be an honest, unadulterated individual?’

Synopsis:  Circa British Rule in India, Satyapriya Archarya (Dharmendra) lives a modest yet noble lifestyle with his grandfather, Satyasharan (Ashok Kumar). His mother passed away while he was very satyakam-umennetyoung, and his dad became a celibate and went off on a pilgrimage, never to return. Satyapriya studies Engineering, and becomes a close friend of fellow-collegian, Narendra Sharma (Sanjeev Kumar). India gains independence, both friends successfully obtain degrees, part ways, and Satyapriya gets employed by the United Paper Mill. Satyapriya soon finds out that his employers want him to forge papers to obtain Government funds, and he resigns in protest. He also finds out that a partner of the paper mill, Kunver Vikram Singh of Bhawanigarh, had sexually molested a young woman, Ranjana, the daughter of a prostitute, and he marries her, earning the wrath of Satyasharan, who refuses to have to do anything with him. Shortly thereafter Ranjana then gives birth to Kabul. Always refusing to adapt to bribery and corruption, Satyapriya moves to town to town, and from one job to another. Narendra and he finally do meet each other – this time Narendra is his immediate Supervisor, and it is here the stage will be set for a confrontation after Narendra instructs Satyapriya to compromise with situations. But for Satyapriya compromise equals corruption – and he will never compromise – even for Narendra.

Watch this movie for the Dharmendra’s performance. He plays the character with the ease, when his warm smile reaches his brimming-with-tears eyes, the sincerity is eminently believable. Sanjeev Kumar’s is incomparable, when he finds his best friend in trouble, and is not able to convince him to be practical.

Rajinder Singh Bedi’s dialogues are another high point of the movie. Some of the dialogues:

  • Distressed-by-poverty Sharmila Tagore remarks- “Sone ke zevar banane ke liye thodi toh khot milani padti hai .
  • When Satyapriya cant adopt to the mindset of others he says – “Mera dimaag kharaab ho gaya hai, ya main cynic ho gaya hoon, ya duniya badal gayee hain “
  • His desire to reach a higher self arises from his conviction that- “main insaan hoon. Bhagwan ka sabse bada pratinidhi”
  • And the sarcastic Dialogue- Yeh aadmi (Satyapriya) bahut hi badmaash aur paaji hai. Rishvat vagerah nahin khaata “

The songs of movie were, though not so hit, but still had a meaningful lyrics by Kaifi Aazmi. One song, Zindagi hai kya, one of my fav, has some good lyrics such as:

Latoo nahi hai, ladki nahi hai, zindagi hai sachai,
mitti ki murat jab sach boli, aadmi tab kahelayi

bander nahin, charkha nahin, aadmi ka kya kehana,
pyar mohabat fitarat uski, dosti majhab uska

lassi nahin hai rasshi nahin dosti dil ki dhadkan,
dushmani  sahara sahara, dosti  gulshan gulshan.

You can have a small glimpse of the film here: Scene shows when Sanjeev Kumar comes to know that Dharmendra is his immidiete junior and he come to visit him in office hours.

Its a movie which makes you to think, and provokes you to follow the Satyapriya’s way of living, but its really tough and you end up being a Naren, like every other man.

I knew the satyakam story much before I saw the movie. Thanks to my dad for introducing me to Amar Chitra Katha. ( I am still a big fan of Amar Chitra Katha).

Shahrukh Khan has been requested to host Indian version of “The Moment of Truth”. Shahrukh Khan is not new to TV, He has his association with TV, since the days of Fauji, Circus, Dusra Kewal. This is also not the first time Shahrukh is hosting any TV show. Earlier he has hosted “Kaun Banega Crorepati” & “Kya Aap Paanchvi Paas Se Tez Hain”. But This time, the game show is quite different one, and doesn’t involve general knowledge questions or questions from school syllabus.

the moment of truthThe Moment of Truth, hosted by Emmy nominated, Mark Walberg,  has been a bold show in the real sense. The host asks contestants a series of 21 questions for the chance to win half a million dollars.

Whats new in that??? Here comes the answer –

The questions are based on the contestants’ personal life. This is the only game show where participants know both the questions and the answers before they begin to play. Prior to playing, participants are strapped to a lie detector and asked a series of questions by a polygraph expert, who records their answers. At any time, between the polygraph and the televised game, participants can change their answers or walk away from the competition.

To win, participants have to answer either yes or no to the questions asked. The questions are easier when the stakes are low  but as the prize amount increases, they will be challenged to face the questions which they might normally answer a lie. Some questions are dangerously revealing as participants reveal the answers in front of spouses, relatives and friends, hanging on every word. If the contestant answers honestly, according to the lie detector results, he has to face the next question. However, if the answer is false (as as per the lie detector) or a refusal is made to answer a question after it has been asked, the game ends.

The difficulty and the nature of question (in personal front) increases with every question asked. To this date no one has reached the last question. Sometimes as a surprise, the contestant’s friend, relative or ex-partner also join in to ask questions. During & after the show, sometimes, contestants (or their relatives) break in to tears, or even break relationships.

Wonderhow serious the show question-answer can be?/ Here is an example –

Contestant Lauren Cleri admitted to committing adultery and that she believes she is meant to be married to an ex-boyfriend instead of her husband..The latter was a replacement question after Lauren’s sister hit the button to keep her from answering the question of whether she’d leave her husband if the same ex-boyfriend (who was present to read this question and the replacement question to her) wanted her back. She won $100,000 and went on to play for $200,000, but lost everything on the question, “Do you think you’re a good person?” She answered “Yes,” which, according to the polygraph, was revealed to be false. In May 2008, Frank Cleri filed for divorce.

Considering the Indian scenario, where such personal openness is still a taboo, it would be interesting to watch how the game is setup for Shahrukh Khan - the Moment of TruthIndians. And the contestants, will they be ready to face such questions? and even if everything is OK, how will they deal with the protests against the show or its pattern.

But When  Roadies, Big Boss & MTV Splitsvilla can be accepted in India, This too can be accepted. and it has more than one reasons to be accepted. We Indians crave to peep in to others lives. And what better than people themselves accepting this openly.

Any which ways, this game is sure to raise money as well as some eyebrows too!!

And the Indian version of “The Moment of Truth” can be called – “Sach ka Pal” or “Dil Sachcha aur Chehra Jhootha” or may be following the tradition of “K- Series” it can be “Kuch Pal Sach Ke”!!

Any more suggesstions? Whats your opinion?

The poster of Delhi 6 says -“From the Director of Rang De Basanti”. After Delhi 6, Rakesh Omprakash Mehra can proudly say in his next film’s poster as -“From the director of Rang De Basanti & Delhi 6“!!!

Delhi 6

Delhi 6 is a movie about Roshan (Abhishek Bachchan), an American, who comes to India with his grandmother (Waheeda Rehaman), as she wants to take her last breath in her country, in her City, Delhi. Roshan, in due course comes across characters like, Bittu (Sonam Kapoor), Madangopal (Om Puri), Ali Uncle (Rishi Kapoor) and many others. With a backdrop of Monkey Man hitting the Delhi streets, and superbly interwoven Hindu Muslim riots, Delhi 6 delivers a heart whelming story of Delhi. With emphasis on Emotions & Humanity, Delhi 6 moves through many issues, just like going through famous Dilli ki Galiyan. It may have locales of Delhi, but its very much like story of any other city in India.

If you have been to Delhi, You will certianly agree to the fact that Delhi is as shown in the Movie. And if you have not been to Delhi, Only heard of it, As I am, then also you will agree that Delhi must be as shown in the Movie. Delhi has always been shown as city of forts & Political Buildings, But the actual streets, better known as gallis, can be seen in this movie. The Children playing in streets, the masjid, temple in same street, the Jalebi wallah, the electrical shop, the traffic etc seem absolutely real. The Movie has been shot on sets, but you wont feel that, not even for a moment!! Binod Pradhan’s Cinematography is awesome.

Performances:
After Drona, Abhishek Bachchan much deserved Hit, and hopefully Delhi 6 is the one. Abhishek plays the American returned, a bit confused, Character with ease. His expressions changes rapidly at the situations, when he comes across  traffic Jam, Jagraata, Qawwali, Riots or even when he watches Taj Mahal for the first time. He has played the cool American guy character, speaking mostly English, who doesnt believe in the caste/religion based issues etc. but on the other hand when he watches her Grandmother doing all this, he simply smiles!! Great job Abhishek.

delhi-6Sonam Kapoor was already pretty much popular before the film. She’s bubbly, Delhi Girl, with high aspirations, and daring enough to do anything for her aspirations. The love story hasn’t been established quite well, but thats understood, as they are just a part of main story.

Wahida Rehman, Does a good job. Rishi Kapoor & Ompuri, are well placed Characters. But they could have been given major role in the climax. Amongst other actors, Pawan Malhotra, Vijay Raaz, Divya Dutta, Atul Kulkarni & Deepak Dobriyal, Deepak Needs a special mention.

Music :

If you have A R Rahman with you, you are bound to hit the right note. What remains a major task is placements of songs, and it has been beautifully done. The Ramleela has been used in between many places as a symbolic to whats happening. It has been beautifully sung by Raghubeer yadav and picturised well.I wonder why some songs have not been shown full. The Delhi6 title track, Genda Phool, Even Massakali which was already a hit, was not shown fully. Although the songs are not fully shown, still they have been shot Beautifully.

Maula mere maula has been picturised awesomely and the shot of Jama Masjid is breath taking. Dil Gira Dafatan has been picturised such as a mix of Newyork & Delhi comes alive on screen. Massakali has been shot very beautifully, and Sonam looks even more beautiful.

Over all Delhi 6 is a complete package offering you every thing. You get to see, Delhi Streets, Dilli ka dil, love, Religion, Politics, Police and language.

My overall rating is 4 out of 5.

Have you seen the movie? What do think about it?

Red Chillies Entertainment, ‘Billu’ (earlier titled Billu Barber), is the latest flm from the Priyadarshan Stable, Starring Irrfan Khan, Lara Dutta and Shah Rukh Khan in the lead.

sudamaThe film is based on a story from epic Mahabharata, from Lord Krishna’s life, Lord Krishna & Sudama. Sudama who is childhood friend of Krishna, is ashamed of his poverty and thinks that Krishna must have forgot him, but Krishna remembers his friend and his help. Billu Barber is modern adaptation of Krishna-Sudama Story.

It is a remake of a Malayalam film, Kadha Parayumbol. The saga of  ‘Billu’ is about the friendship of an ordinary barber and a Superstar. Priyadarshan has his own unique way of delivering the story in a simple and lucid manner which just grabs your attention.

“Billu” is a story of a barber, Billu (Irfaan Khan). He is struggling hard to run his shop, against all odds, No money, no furniture for shop, another barber in competition with modern saloon. Only person standing by his side is Billu Barberwife, Bindiya (Lara Dutta), who understand him. Billu struggles a lot to earn for his family. His poverty is another reason for loss of education of their children.

Things Suddenly change in a small village Budbuda (UP), when superstar Sahir Khan decides to shoot his film there. Sahir Khan is Billu’s childhood friend. Knowing that  Sahir Khan is Billu’s childhood friend, villegers’  behaviour suddenly changes towards Billu. Everyone wants to meet Sahir Khan through Billu. However, Billu tries to apprach him, but he fails to do so. With this the villagers get angry and already in trouble Billu has to face their additional wrath.  But at the end the story reveals when Sahir Khan himself, tells the villegers about their Friendship.

Coming to the performances, Irrfan Khan has once again done, what he does best, Acting. He is simply superb. He beautifully plays the character of Billu, who is happy and smiles even in toughest times. The scene where Billu rings Sahir Khan to talk is worth mentioning. Irrfan Khan has done it wonderfully. Lara Dutta is good. The kids Gunja & Kalu deserve a special mention.

Shahrukh Khan has played himself. His super stardom has been filmed very well. He calls himself King Khan, His posters are all over the village, People copying his Hairstyle, and even, Billu’s wife dreaming him in her dreams!! The three special special songs with Kareena, Deepika and Priyanka are worth watching. Though they are not of part of story, but doesnt seem to distract too.

The climax of the film, when Sahir Khan harks back to his childhood friendship with Billu and recalls the deep amity they both shared together makes you feel good, makes your heart feel good for the goodness.

With this film Priyadarshan proves that he can still make serious and sensitive films, and he has the same mastery as he has in making comedies.

The songs of film were already hit. The songs have been picturised superbly especially MarJani Marjani & Khudaya Khair. Pritam impresses with spongy music. And Gulzar has again written some great lyrics. just imagine this:

Wo jab nakhun kutarti hai, to chanda ghatne lagta hai,
Wo jab paani pe kadam rakhe, sagar bhi hat jata hai . .

Isnt it amazing!!!

On the whole, ‘Billu’ will be with you even when you leave from theatre. The movie leaves a sweet smile on your face and huge impression on your mind and that is its success.
