Red Chillies Entertainment, ‘Billu’ (earlier titled Billu Barber), is the latest flm from the Priyadarshan Stable, Starring Irrfan Khan, Lara Dutta and Shah Rukh Khan in the lead.

sudamaThe film is based on a story from epic Mahabharata, from Lord Krishna’s life, Lord Krishna & Sudama. Sudama who is childhood friend of Krishna, is ashamed of his poverty and thinks that Krishna must have forgot him, but Krishna remembers his friend and his help. Billu Barber is modern adaptation of Krishna-Sudama Story.

It is a remake of a Malayalam film, Kadha Parayumbol. The saga of  ‘Billu’ is about the friendship of an ordinary barber and a Superstar. Priyadarshan has his own unique way of delivering the story in a simple and lucid manner which just grabs your attention.

“Billu” is a story of a barber, Billu (Irfaan Khan). He is struggling hard to run his shop, against all odds, No money, no furniture for shop, another barber in competition with modern saloon. Only person standing by his side is Billu Barberwife, Bindiya (Lara Dutta), who understand him. Billu struggles a lot to earn for his family. His poverty is another reason for loss of education of their children.

Things Suddenly change in a small village Budbuda (UP), when superstar Sahir Khan decides to shoot his film there. Sahir Khan is Billu’s childhood friend. Knowing that  Sahir Khan is Billu’s childhood friend, villegers’  behaviour suddenly changes towards Billu. Everyone wants to meet Sahir Khan through Billu. However, Billu tries to apprach him, but he fails to do so. With this the villagers get angry and already in trouble Billu has to face their additional wrath.  But at the end the story reveals when Sahir Khan himself, tells the villegers about their Friendship.

Coming to the performances, Irrfan Khan has once again done, what he does best, Acting. He is simply superb. He beautifully plays the character of Billu, who is happy and smiles even in toughest times. The scene where Billu rings Sahir Khan to talk is worth mentioning. Irrfan Khan has done it wonderfully. Lara Dutta is good. The kids Gunja & Kalu deserve a special mention.

Shahrukh Khan has played himself. His super stardom has been filmed very well. He calls himself King Khan, His posters are all over the village, People copying his Hairstyle, and even, Billu’s wife dreaming him in her dreams!! The three special special songs with Kareena, Deepika and Priyanka are worth watching. Though they are not of part of story, but doesnt seem to distract too.

The climax of the film, when Sahir Khan harks back to his childhood friendship with Billu and recalls the deep amity they both shared together makes you feel good, makes your heart feel good for the goodness.

With this film Priyadarshan proves that he can still make serious and sensitive films, and he has the same mastery as he has in making comedies.

The songs of film were already hit. The songs have been picturised superbly especially MarJani Marjani & Khudaya Khair. Pritam impresses with spongy music. And Gulzar has again written some great lyrics. just imagine this:

Wo jab nakhun kutarti hai, to chanda ghatne lagta hai,
Wo jab paani pe kadam rakhe, sagar bhi hat jata hai . .

Isnt it amazing!!!

On the whole, ‘Billu’ will be with you even when you leave from theatre. The movie leaves a sweet smile on your face and huge impression on your mind and that is its success.

Last weekend was a long one and I, along with my friends, went on a trip to Chiplun-Dhapoli. You can find the Pics here. While returning its was around 1 Am, and Massakali from Delhi 6 was playing loud…. and Bhanu and I were singing along with it. We listened to it atleast 4 times again n again…..

The song has a certain charm which keeps your ears glued to the sound. The words are simple which we use daily…. udd, mud, ghar, saloni, manmani…. and my first thought was its Gulzar again!! Who else can write such lyrics other than Gulzar?? But, to my surprise its Prasoon Joshi!! Prasoon Joshi has given some great Lyircs in Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par, but this time , with Massakali, he has tried to have the Gulzar’s touch…. he has the special ability to transform the everyday used words in to meaningful songs. But now Prasoon Joshi also has done it, imagine transforming words such as  kasbe kuche nukkad basti . ..  in to a song!!!

Masakali

Have a look at the song:

Aye Masakali Masakali, Ud Mataakali Mataakali
Aye Masakali Masa Masa Kali, Ud Mataakali Mataakali
Masakali Masakali, Ud Mataakali Mataakali
Zara Pankh Jhatak, Gai Dhool Atak
Aur Lachak Machak Ke Durr Bhatak
Ud Dagar Dagar Kasbe Kuche Nukkad Basti
Mein Yeah E Yeah E,
Itdi Se Mud Ada Se Ud,
Kar Le Puri Dil Ki Tamanna, Hawa Se Jud Ada Se Ud
Purr Bhuur Bhurrr Phuurrr, Tu Hai Heera Panna Ree
Masakali Masakali, Ud Mataakali Mataakali

Ghar Tera Saloni, Badal Ki Colony
Dikha de Thenga In Sabko Jo Udna Na Jane
(Udiyo Na Dariyo Kar Manmani Manmani Manmani
Badhiyo Naa Mudiyon Kar Nadani) – 2
Abb Than Le Muskan Le, Keh Sana Nana Na Na Na Hawa
Bas Than Le Tu Jaan Le, Keh Sana Nana Na Na Na Hawa
Aye Masakali Masakali, Ud Mataakali Mataakali
Aye Masakali Masa Masa Kali, Masakali Masakali, Ud Mata….

Tujhe Kya Gham Tera Rishta, Gagan Ki Bansuri Se Hai
Pawan Ki Guftagu Se Hai, Suraj Ki Roshani Se Hai
(Udiyo Na Dariyo Kar Manmani Manmani Manmani
Badhiyo Naa Mudiyon Kar Nadani) – 2
Abb Than Le Muskan Le, Keh Sana Nana Na Na Na Hawa
Bas Than Le Tu Jaan Le, Keh Sana Nana Na Na Na Hawa
Masakali Masakali, Ud Matak Matak Matakali
Masakali Masa Masa Masakali, Matak Matak …

Your first thought would be what’s Massakali. So, Director Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra, says

My definition of Masakali… Masakali is a song about liberation and freedom. Flying high.

It is the name of the white pigeon which is dancing on Sonam’s head. The white pigeon has also found it’s way perched on the Delhi 6 logo. For me it depicts peace and love which is the essential soul of the film. The song is also Bittu’s (Sonam Kapoor) aspiration to break free and fly high.

My experience while shooting the song…well more than shooting it was while recording the song. While I was briefing Prasoon Joshi and AR Rahman on the same, Rahman kept coming up with the thought of a white pigeon and I told him it’s a strange coincidence that we have a white pigeon named Masakali in the film.

Can you imagine a Dove being referred as: Heera panna, and badal ki Colony, and Dikha de thenga jo udna na jaane!! Hats off to the imgination. Prasoon Joshi’s flight of Imagination is even higher than massakali’s!!!

And to complement the song, Maestro A R Rahman’s Music. The use of Mouthorgan is simply awesome.

And the singer needs a special mention for delivering a brilliant performance.  Did you recognise the singer. He is Mohit Chouhan.Dont remember?? He is the same mohit Chouhan who sang:

Dooba dooba rehta hun yaadon me teri,
Deewana ban gaya hun main chahat me teri . .

After the Super success of Tum se hi (jab we met), he is again ready with massakali.

And the way its has been picturised needs a special mention. Sonam Kapoor looks just great in the promos. She looks the girl next door, and the way she dances with dove on her head, or walks on the streets,  or makes faces just make her more adorable each time.

Its  6th time the song is playing in my PC. I am just addicted to it!!!

Comments are most welcome . . .

Go after a dream that is destined to fail without divine intervention. Keep asking questions. Keep making mistakes. Keep seeking God. Stop pointing out problems and become part of the solution. Stop repeating the past and start creating the future. Stop playing it safe and start taking risks. Expand your horizons. Accumulate experiences. Consider the lilies. Enjoy the journey. Find every excuse you can to celebrate everything you can. Live like today is the first day and last day of your life. Don’t let what’s wrong with you keep you from worshipping what’s right with God. Burn sinful bridges. Blaze a new trail. Criticize by creating. Worry less about what people think and more about what God thinks. Don’t try to be who you’re not. Be yourself. Laugh at yourself. Quit holding out. Quit holding back. Quit running away”

Ok Guys with this great note, Wishing you all a Happy, Prosperous and Safe New year!!!

The third cardinal virtue: Love

According to the dictionary: from the Latin amor:
strong affection that drives us towards the object of our desires; inclination of the soul and heart; affection; passion; exclusive inclination; theological grace.

In the New Testament: So faith, hope and love endure. These are the great three, and the greatest of them is love. (Corinthians 13:13)

According to etymology: the Greeks had three words to designate love: Eros, Philos and Agape. Eros is the healthy love between two persons that justifies life and perpetuates the human race. Philos is the sentiment that we dedicate to our friends. Finally, Agape, which contains both Eros and Philos, goes far beyond “liking” someone. Agape is total love, the love that devours those who feel it. For Catholics, this was the love that Jesus felt for humanity, and it was so great that it shook the stars and changed the course of the history of men. Those who know and feel Agape realize that nothing else in this world has any importance, only loving.

For Oscar Wilde:

Yet each man kills the thing he loves
By each let this be heard,
Some do it with a bitter look,
Some with a flattering word,
The coward does it with a kiss,
The brave man with a sword!
(Ballad of Reading Jail, 1898)

In a late 19th century sermon: Pour your lovegenerously on the poor, which is easy; and on the rich, who distrust everybody and cannot see the love that they so need. And on your neighbor – which is very difficult, because it is towards him that we are most selfish. Love. Never lose a chance to give joy to your neighbor, because you will be the first to benefit from this – even if nobody knows what you are doing. The world around you will become happier, and things will become easier for you.

I am in this world living the present. Any good thing that I can do, or any happiness that I can bring to others, please tell me. Don’t let me put things off or forget, because I shall never live this moment again. (Henry Drummond The Supreme Gift, [1851-1897])

In an e-mail received by the author: “While I kept my heart to myself, I never had a single morning of anguish or a single night of insomnia. Since I fell in love, my life has been a sequence of anguish, losses, confusion. I think that God, by using love, managed to hide hell in the middle of Paradise” (C.A., 23/11/2006)

For science: In the year 2000, researchers Andreas Bartels and Semir Zeki, of University College in London, located the areas of the brain activated by romantic love by using a series of students who claimed to be madly in love. In the first place, they concluded that the zones affected by the sentiment are far smaller than they had imagined, and are the same as those activated by stimuli of euphoria, such as in using cocaine, for example. Which led the authors
to conclude that love is similar to the manifestation of physical dependence provoked by drugs.

Also using the same system of scanning the brain, scientist Helen Fisher, of Rutgers University, concludes that three characteristics of love (sex, romanticism and mutual dependence) stimulate different areas of the cortex, and further conclude that we can be in love with one person, want to make love to another, and live with a third.

For a poet: Love possesses nothing and does not want to be possessed, because it is enough in itself. It will make you grow, and then throw you on the ground. It will whip you so that you feel your impotence, it will shake you to rid you of all your impurities. It will crush you to leave you flexible.

And then it will toss you in the fire so that you can become the blessed bread to be served at God’s sacred feast (The Prophet, by Khalil Gibran [1883-1931])

Confessions of new age virgins

Found this article in Mid-Day

Most men are okay experimenting before they get hitched, but they prefer if their woman is untouched
– Munira Chendvanker

I had been the “easy” one among my friends. I was the one who got kissed first, and couldn’t quite understand what was taboo about “making out”. My friends teased me about my long list of boyfriends. But it was okay. I tried things at my own pace, except when it came to sex.

I was a virgin when I got married, and if I ever tell them, they’d raise an eyebrow. I went from being easy to stupid, in a span of three years. Suddenly, experimenting was the right thing to do. What if you got married to someone you weren’t sexually compatible with, my friends would’ve argued?

She’ll wait till she’s comfortable

Munira Chendvankar, a second year Bachelors of Mass Media student at KC College, was only expressing her opinion among friends over coffee, when the “I want to wait till I’m married” line silenced the rest. “They were surprised. I don’t know what the big deal is, though. Sex is
hype. I want to wait because I want to be comfortable with the guy I share my body with.

And that, I believe, will happen only once I marry,” says the 18 year-old, who hasn’t been in a relationship, and says she will date a man who respects her decision. Munira’s
parents, who she shares a close bond with, trust her. “They’ve told me never to cross the line. I don’t want to break their trust. Love is more important than lust, anyway.”

Munira is an anachronism

The crowd she hangs out with, the lifestyle they lead, luxuries they enjoy, make for a setting where sexual freedom would be permissible. Munira’s classmate Priyanka Vohra, 18, stands at the other end of the spectrum, saying it depends on the relationship and individual. “Why is sex before marriage seen as wrong? It’s pretty obvious that everyone is doing it,” she shrugs.

Marriage is boring

TV anchor Suprita Mitter, 24, has a boyfriend, but insists she’s going to wait to get married to pop her cherry. “Marriage is so boring. If we had sex before marriage, we’d take away the most exciting bit of being married.” Besides, Suprita stresses, the consequences can be complicated for a woman.

Abortions are routine

Unwanted pregnancies are on the rise in India, but it’s Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) that are raising an alarm among gynaecologists. Dr Rishma Dhillon Pai, Consultant at Lilavati and Jaslok Hospitals, reveals she’s been conducting almost 25 abortions a month. “What’s
worrisome is the attitude youngsters display. Most of them think it’s all okay.” The girls are usually aged 19 to 25, and belong to the city’s elite.

Society, religion dissuade some

The city’s psychologists believe the reasons for shying away from sex, could be many. With our conservative sensibilities, most Indians aren’t comfortable with their body, raising the fear of rejection, when exposed. Psychologist Dr Seema Hingorrany says, “I’ve also encountered some who are fiercely career driven. Sex complicates a relationship. They don’t have time for extra baggage.”

For others, it has to do with morals and religion. Dr Rahul Ghadge, psychiatrist with Bafna
Polyclinic tells you how “wrong” is considered a synonym for sex, since some religions stress on celibacy before marriage, and frown on contraception. “Some youngsters may feel sexual freedom before marriage is not in keeping with societal norms. There is this notion of turning ‘second hand’ if you’ve lost your virginity,” he says.

Why is sex before marriage seen as taboo? It’s pretty obvious that everyone is doing it.– Priyanka Vohra

Marriage is so boring. If we had sex before marriage, we’d take away the most exciting bit about being married.

– Suprita Mitter
