Its time of elections. For those who vote and even for those who prefer to abstain, there is always a clear stand about who should be the nation’s next Prime Minister. I recieved a mail, in this context, Just posting here.

—————————————————————————————————————————————

I have been witnessing a spate of  ‘feel good’ propaganda films of Congress on TV these days, transporting me back to the golden ‘Shining India’ times. The publicists have very cleverly used rural background in nearly all these advertisements. I have deep roots in my village and firmly believe that unless rural economies improve and people have decent incomes and dignified life, people will keep streaming into cities and all cities will slowly become mass slums – with people leading dog like lives in these slums.

General Elections 2009 umennetFrom this point of view NREG scheme is welcome. But, unfortunately it has become like all socialist schemes – a money making racket for the middle men, mostly belonging to ruling parties. You just have to read Jean Drez’s interview in TOI to understand what I mean. Thus, all the hard earned money of citizens like me has been sent down the village nullahs by this government to garner votes. Just as farmer loan waivers have only benefited their big fat farmer friends and not those who are actually starving to death and giving up their lives. The numbers are mind numbing. It is ironic that the government which came up through the funeral pyres of unfortunate farmers couldnt reduce, let alone stop these suicidal deaths.

But, for the present, let me speak as an urban citizen as most of the politicians take urban voters for granted, though they collect all legal and illegal money for official and unofficial purposes from cities.

Mr. P. Chidambaram, who has been the FM for nearly the whole term and talks down to anybody who doubts his superior knowledge and intellect has done his best to nearly halt the liberalization process initiated by Mr. Manmohan Singh  in his earlier avataar, as a person possessed, to  undo whatever he had done as the yes man of socialist parasites during great 5 year planning eras. NDA had taken the momentum forward and took some bold steps in a very graded and planned manner to unshackle the economy  with stable policies. Thus, we saw an unprecedented growth trajectory, which Indian economy had never seen under Nehru rate of growth, taking our economy to a new orbit.

This government of ‘aam aadmi’ has made the taxation system incomprehensible again By increasing the scope of service tax and TDS to include more and more ‘aam aadmi’ in the net and  empowering more and more ‘babus’.

Just take an example – one first charges service tax then the payee deducts TDS. Then, one adjusts service charges that one paid against the service charges one charged!  We have FBT to penalize the companies who work harder and have people on the street to sell more and work harder. We also have various kinds of surcharges and cess to compound the confusion further. Thus, more and more paper work has helped auditors and babus, but not the ‘aam aadmi’ who sweats it out to earn is daily bread. Privileged classes like Doctors and Lawyers don’t fall into this spreading out of net. As an esteemed lawyer, he knows best why they shouldnt be brought into the net.

Ofcourse, he has a soft corner for his rich friends, so periodically he allows them voluntary disclosures so they can sleep well. No such luck for poor salaried class. The driblets of concessions he gets in basic income tax are more than offset by reduction in savings incentives. Yes, our FM is smart! All the talk of less paper work for common man is a cruel joke on him/her. The attack is from both sides – income as well as expense. Our intelligent FM believed that Indians save too much and don’t gamble on things like stock markets – the Gods of modern economies – so incentives on all kinds of savings has been reduced. Ceilings on housing loan deductions have been reduced. In the process, we have also squeezed the infrastructure based savings through housing finance etc. Idea is to discourage savings and drain them on consumerist life style, the bane of western civilization. We haven’t learnt the lessons of history that real growth comes from real savings. Now, having been hit by recession, the truth may dawn on us, but at what cost?

In return for all this pain, what have I got? Infrastructure? I think, I will die counting pot holes, dug up roads, horrible roads, drainage system, poor conveyance options. My power bills have gone up, thanks to ‘privatization’ without accountability. May be my kids will enjoy the fruits of this painful crawling growth, may be my grand sons/daughters? Highways stopped expanding. I wonder where is my petrol cess going? All trains seem to lead to Bihar where nobody pays for them. I still have to go through a loopy root to Bangalore taking 25 hours though the direct and shorter link is available. May be the bus operators offer good incentives to our rulers for not paying attention to this region. I still take 17 hours to go to Hyderabad while buses running on such poor highways take only 13 hours! I have no fast connections between Mumbai and Chennai. I am told that many of these are still single track routes. I sincerely believe that Railway ministry should be rotational so the whole of India benefits.

Yes, air travel has grown multifold, courtesy a few brave men like Capt. Gopinath. From our government we have received two dozen foundation stones in the last month of its existence, so the sauve Civil Aviation minister and his generations to come will see his name plastered all over India. I think, after Nehru Gandhi family, his name would appear in maximum numbers all over India! But, till things improve, I will suffer with poor infrastructure  and always take a flight with prayers on my lips for safe landing.

The lack of fiscal discipline and disincentive on savings, lack of infrastructure has magnified the impact of global recession much more than it should have. Had this government been prudent and carried on the good work already done by earlier govt., our economy may not have been in the shape that it is today. Here we have a government that likes to pat itself on its back for reaping the fruits of past government but eager to shrug off the failures on global trends!

And now my honest and well meaning PM, who couldnt control his FM or put some simple home truths to him wishes me to vote for him. What for? To preside another term of anarchy of a cabinet where each minister is on his own trip and country is left at the mercy of such a cabal?

Satyakam is an ideal of truth, obedience and true service to the guru. Satyakam’s story is from Chhandogopnishad (4th chapter).  The Story goes like this:

satyakam umennetSatyakam was the son of a woman named Jabal. He had a strong wish to study and so he left home in search of a guru. He went to the ashram of sage Gautam and requested him to make him his pupil. Gautam questioned him, “Before I make you my pupil, I need to know about your family.”  This puzzled Satyakam, as he had no idea about his family except his mother. But to join the ashram he would not lie. He told the sage that he would ask his mother. So he went to Jabal.

His mother told him, ” Go to the sage and tell him ‘I am the son of Jabal and my name is Satyakam Jabali‘.” (Jabal had served as maid servant to many, and she did not knew who Satykam’s father was). Satyakam went to Gautam and told him what he knew. The sage was pleased with his love for truth and accepted him as his pupil.

Based on this story, a film by same name was released in 1969, directed by Hrishikesh Muherjee. With Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Sharmila Tagore & Ashok Kumar in leading roles, this is till date Dharmendra’s best performance.  Satyakam is story of  Satyapriya Acharya, Played by Dharmendra, who embodies the repercussions that result when a man places his lofty ideals over social obligations, monetary temptations and, indeed, over his own family.

A riveting, nationalist drama in which, Satyakam asks, ‘In an imperfect world, is it possible to be an honest, unadulterated individual?’

Synopsis:  Circa British Rule in India, Satyapriya Archarya (Dharmendra) lives a modest yet noble lifestyle with his grandfather, Satyasharan (Ashok Kumar). His mother passed away while he was very satyakam-umennetyoung, and his dad became a celibate and went off on a pilgrimage, never to return. Satyapriya studies Engineering, and becomes a close friend of fellow-collegian, Narendra Sharma (Sanjeev Kumar). India gains independence, both friends successfully obtain degrees, part ways, and Satyapriya gets employed by the United Paper Mill. Satyapriya soon finds out that his employers want him to forge papers to obtain Government funds, and he resigns in protest. He also finds out that a partner of the paper mill, Kunver Vikram Singh of Bhawanigarh, had sexually molested a young woman, Ranjana, the daughter of a prostitute, and he marries her, earning the wrath of Satyasharan, who refuses to have to do anything with him. Shortly thereafter Ranjana then gives birth to Kabul. Always refusing to adapt to bribery and corruption, Satyapriya moves to town to town, and from one job to another. Narendra and he finally do meet each other – this time Narendra is his immediate Supervisor, and it is here the stage will be set for a confrontation after Narendra instructs Satyapriya to compromise with situations. But for Satyapriya compromise equals corruption – and he will never compromise – even for Narendra.

Watch this movie for the Dharmendra’s performance. He plays the character with the ease, when his warm smile reaches his brimming-with-tears eyes, the sincerity is eminently believable. Sanjeev Kumar’s is incomparable, when he finds his best friend in trouble, and is not able to convince him to be practical.

Rajinder Singh Bedi’s dialogues are another high point of the movie. Some of the dialogues:

  • Distressed-by-poverty Sharmila Tagore remarks- “Sone ke zevar banane ke liye thodi toh khot milani padti hai .
  • When Satyapriya cant adopt to the mindset of others he says – “Mera dimaag kharaab ho gaya hai, ya main cynic ho gaya hoon, ya duniya badal gayee hain “
  • His desire to reach a higher self arises from his conviction that- “main insaan hoon. Bhagwan ka sabse bada pratinidhi”
  • And the sarcastic Dialogue- Yeh aadmi (Satyapriya) bahut hi badmaash aur paaji hai. Rishvat vagerah nahin khaata “

The songs of movie were, though not so hit, but still had a meaningful lyrics by Kaifi Aazmi. One song, Zindagi hai kya, one of my fav, has some good lyrics such as:

Latoo nahi hai, ladki nahi hai, zindagi hai sachai,
mitti ki murat jab sach boli, aadmi tab kahelayi

bander nahin, charkha nahin, aadmi ka kya kehana,
pyar mohabat fitarat uski, dosti majhab uska

lassi nahin hai rasshi nahin dosti dil ki dhadkan,
dushmani  sahara sahara, dosti  gulshan gulshan.

You can have a small glimpse of the film here: Scene shows when Sanjeev Kumar comes to know that Dharmendra is his immidiete junior and he come to visit him in office hours.

Its a movie which makes you to think, and provokes you to follow the Satyapriya’s way of living, but its really tough and you end up being a Naren, like every other man.

I knew the satyakam story much before I saw the movie. Thanks to my dad for introducing me to Amar Chitra Katha. ( I am still a big fan of Amar Chitra Katha).

A mutually favored discussion topic by people all over the world would definitely be that of Women – Bubbly, Leggy, Demure, Racy, Adventurous, Girlish, Boisterous or Flirtatious! Men love to know and women always yearn to intro-discover.

Why? Well, it gives a chance to the guys to maybe catch that detail which will give them the much needed edge. And ladies just plainly desire to hear and speak about themselves and their genre as this simple act of sharing enriches her well of knowledge and makes her female heart Happy! Happy! Happy! Children are drawn to women while animals too naturally veer towards a feminine entity as they pick up their nurturing, emphatic vibes.

International Womens DaySo in a Man’s World, March 8 lets us draw attention to the female species with all of her complexities! Does one expect that these 24 hours will wrong all rights? No, of course not…but it’s a step in this ongoing fight.

The one accomplishment is here to see – International Woman’s Day (IWD) is widely renowned, way beyond a Hallmark fantasy! It is a global phenomenon honored by most countries around the world including some Islamic states. The day is an official holiday in Albania, Brazil, China, Cuba, Italy, Israel, Laos, Kazakhstan, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Vietnam, and many more…

The reason IWD has much clout is due to the fact that it was political by nature to begin with and then it slowly transformed into a more social amalgamation of Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day. Its actual essence however is to address the economic, political and social achievements of women worldwide while trying to identify top priority problems and address them.

With very specific aims drawn out each year, for International Women’s Day 2009, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has pointed out that Specific Health-Care needs of women are often ignored or insufficiently taken into account, especially in war situations. While armed conflicts and other violence affect entire communities, women are particularly at risk of rape and other forms of sexual violence – a very topical issue indeed. In fact, in Pakistan working women celebrate International Women’s Day every year to commemorate their ongoing struggle for due rights, despite facing many cultural and religious restrictions.

Ok, but if we return to the universal basics…Popular psychology journals claim that Women Co-operate and Men Compete. This is evident from gender-symbola very young age when toddlers of both sexes demonstrate behavior typical to their genders. It’s not a mystery, which approach is needed in today’s difficult times. Cooperation builds while Competition breaks apart and destroys. Some lucky ones may emerge successful in the latter system but the Universal Laws emphasize progress of entire existence and not individual Achievers.

Secondly, what are the images that conjure up in your mind when you think ‘Woman”? Yes, be honest… blinking shy eyes, soft delicate skin, lilting gentle voice, and emphatic, understanding ways. Some may have been subjected to certain other traits such as nagging, tantruming and endless tears but these are not typical traits to be taken too seriously! But all of the traits that make a woman memorable are what make her the fairer sex. In times where sex roles are overlapping and confused, it is the women who have risen to the challenge and conquered the home and office.

Naturally, she is meant to be cared for and protected from the harsh world so that she may shield all the values that she brings with her to impart to her offspring. An ancient perception I know, but no doubt the basic truth. But today when men and women are not restricted to their traditional roles, it is quite evident that it is the female race that has proven itself in all fields. She’s still the one who keeps the family together and tops the merit lists. She’s recognized as a competent professional while she also puts her family first on a daily basis.

Plus, it is no co-incidence that March 8th is also celebrated as the first spring holiday, considered the first day of the spring season – a time for the blooming of fresh ideas and new beginnings. Let’s take the first step and change our vantage point when it comes to the woman in our life and do something towards finding hope for today’s girl, tomorrow’s woman. She’s counting on you…

Happy Woman’s Day!

Last weekend was a long one and I, along with my friends, went on a trip to Chiplun-Dhapoli. You can find the Pics here. While returning its was around 1 Am, and Massakali from Delhi 6 was playing loud…. and Bhanu and I were singing along with it. We listened to it atleast 4 times again n again…..

The song has a certain charm which keeps your ears glued to the sound. The words are simple which we use daily…. udd, mud, ghar, saloni, manmani…. and my first thought was its Gulzar again!! Who else can write such lyrics other than Gulzar?? But, to my surprise its Prasoon Joshi!! Prasoon Joshi has given some great Lyircs in Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par, but this time , with Massakali, he has tried to have the Gulzar’s touch…. he has the special ability to transform the everyday used words in to meaningful songs. But now Prasoon Joshi also has done it, imagine transforming words such as  kasbe kuche nukkad basti . ..  in to a song!!!

Masakali

Have a look at the song:

Aye Masakali Masakali, Ud Mataakali Mataakali
Aye Masakali Masa Masa Kali, Ud Mataakali Mataakali
Masakali Masakali, Ud Mataakali Mataakali
Zara Pankh Jhatak, Gai Dhool Atak
Aur Lachak Machak Ke Durr Bhatak
Ud Dagar Dagar Kasbe Kuche Nukkad Basti
Mein Yeah E Yeah E,
Itdi Se Mud Ada Se Ud,
Kar Le Puri Dil Ki Tamanna, Hawa Se Jud Ada Se Ud
Purr Bhuur Bhurrr Phuurrr, Tu Hai Heera Panna Ree
Masakali Masakali, Ud Mataakali Mataakali

Ghar Tera Saloni, Badal Ki Colony
Dikha de Thenga In Sabko Jo Udna Na Jane
(Udiyo Na Dariyo Kar Manmani Manmani Manmani
Badhiyo Naa Mudiyon Kar Nadani) – 2
Abb Than Le Muskan Le, Keh Sana Nana Na Na Na Hawa
Bas Than Le Tu Jaan Le, Keh Sana Nana Na Na Na Hawa
Aye Masakali Masakali, Ud Mataakali Mataakali
Aye Masakali Masa Masa Kali, Masakali Masakali, Ud Mata….

Tujhe Kya Gham Tera Rishta, Gagan Ki Bansuri Se Hai
Pawan Ki Guftagu Se Hai, Suraj Ki Roshani Se Hai
(Udiyo Na Dariyo Kar Manmani Manmani Manmani
Badhiyo Naa Mudiyon Kar Nadani) – 2
Abb Than Le Muskan Le, Keh Sana Nana Na Na Na Hawa
Bas Than Le Tu Jaan Le, Keh Sana Nana Na Na Na Hawa
Masakali Masakali, Ud Matak Matak Matakali
Masakali Masa Masa Masakali, Matak Matak …

Your first thought would be what’s Massakali. So, Director Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra, says

My definition of Masakali… Masakali is a song about liberation and freedom. Flying high.

It is the name of the white pigeon which is dancing on Sonam’s head. The white pigeon has also found it’s way perched on the Delhi 6 logo. For me it depicts peace and love which is the essential soul of the film. The song is also Bittu’s (Sonam Kapoor) aspiration to break free and fly high.

My experience while shooting the song…well more than shooting it was while recording the song. While I was briefing Prasoon Joshi and AR Rahman on the same, Rahman kept coming up with the thought of a white pigeon and I told him it’s a strange coincidence that we have a white pigeon named Masakali in the film.

Can you imagine a Dove being referred as: Heera panna, and badal ki Colony, and Dikha de thenga jo udna na jaane!! Hats off to the imgination. Prasoon Joshi’s flight of Imagination is even higher than massakali’s!!!

And to complement the song, Maestro A R Rahman’s Music. The use of Mouthorgan is simply awesome.

And the singer needs a special mention for delivering a brilliant performance.  Did you recognise the singer. He is Mohit Chouhan.Dont remember?? He is the same mohit Chouhan who sang:

Dooba dooba rehta hun yaadon me teri,
Deewana ban gaya hun main chahat me teri . .

After the Super success of Tum se hi (jab we met), he is again ready with massakali.

And the way its has been picturised needs a special mention. Sonam Kapoor looks just great in the promos. She looks the girl next door, and the way she dances with dove on her head, or walks on the streets,  or makes faces just make her more adorable each time.

Its  6th time the song is playing in my PC. I am just addicted to it!!!

Comments are most welcome . . .
